As part of KnowBe4's ongoing commitment to veterans and their families, we host a yearly $10,000 scholarship and (ISC)2 certification package, which is open to any United States veteran, Guard, Reserve, or their spouses who are currently pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. Today, we hear from Angelo, our 2023 scholarship winner, an Army Veteran who is passionate about continuing his education in cybersecurity! With this scholarship, he plans to finish his bachelor's degree in information technology with a focus in cybersecurity. Let's dive deeper into conversations with Angelo!

My passion for cybersecurity began when I realized how vulnerable my island's IT infrastructure is to cyber threats. Working here at the Department of Public Work in American Samoa has exposed me to different areas of technology, which sparked my interest in cybersecurity.

How will this scholarship help you start your career?

This scholarship will provide me with the financial support needed to complete a bachelor’s in information technology with a focus in cybersecurity. With this education, I can further my skills and contribute more to the IT department I am working in. This will help bring awareness of cybersecurity threats to my island.

What do you like to do for fun?

Like any techy person, I love to play video games! I also love to spend quality time with my family and am continuously seeking opportunities to grow my cybersecurity skills. I participate in ethical hacking events and pursue additional certifications to further my education in addition to my collegiate coursework.

Who inspires you?

My inspiration is primarily my family, especially as my kids are growing up during this rapid technological development era. They are a driving force behind my passion for cybersecurity. I am dedicated to bringing awareness to the threats to my small island as it becomes an integral part of our lifestyle, but the threats are not as well-known.

What advice would you give to someone applying for this scholarship?

I would advise applicants to emphasize their passion for cybersecurity, their commitment to continuous learning, and their desire to help create a more secure world. If you demonstrate a clear understanding of the field’s importance and determination to make an impact in the field, especially in a community like mine, it will significantly enhance your chance to receive this scholarship.

Are you KnowBe4's next scholarship winner?
