Mailserver Security Assessment

Email Is Still a Top Attack Vector—Test Your Filters:

Spoofed domains, malicious attachments and executables to name a few... With email still being a top attack vector, do you know if hackers can get through your mail filters?

KnowBe4’s Mailserver Security Assessment (MSA) tests your mailserver configuration by sending 40 different types of email message tests that check the effectiveness of your mail filtering rules.

MSA gives you a quick insight at how your mailserver handles test messages that contain a variety of different message types including email with attachments that contain password-protected, macro zipped, and .exe files or have spoofed domains.

How the Mailserver Security Assessment (MSA) works:

  • 100% non-malicious packages sent
  • Select from 40 automated email message types to test against
  • Saves you time! No more manual testing of individual email messages with MSA's automated send, test, and result status
  • Validate that your current filtering rules work as expected
  • Results in an hour or less!

Mailserver Security Assessment FAQs

What do I need before I run the mailserver security test?

You’ll need access to the inbox or destination where the test emails will be delivered and visibility into your filtering outcomes (delivered vs. quarantined vs. blocked). If you use multiple gateways or routes, choose the primary path you want to evaluate first.

Can I run MSA for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?

Yes. MSA can be used to test cloud email environments as long as the test emails are routed through the filters and policies you want to validate. It’s especially helpful for confirming that your current rules are catching common threat patterns.

What do I do if some test emails get through my filters?

Use the results to fine-tune your mail security settings and filtering policies. Typical next steps include tightening attachment handling rules, adjusting spoofing protections, reviewing allowlists, and validating that quarantine and alerting are configured correctly.
