How Knowsters Celebrated World Environment Day and World Oceans Day

June brought two critical reminders of our shared responsibility to care for the planet: World Environment Day on June 5th and World Oceans Day on June 8th

World Environment Day focuses on global awareness and action for the protection of our surroundings, highlighting pressing issues like land degradation, climate change, and biodiversity loss. World Oceans Day shifts our focus to the blue heart of our planet, celebrating the ocean's role in sustaining life.

Legendary marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle sums up this connection perfectly:

"Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume."

To put these days into perspective, here are a few critical realities facing our land and sea environments:

• - Plastic items take anywhere from 400 to 1,000 years to decompose. Instead of disappearing, they break down into microplastics that permanently contaminate our soil and water systems.

• - Approximately 11 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans annually, threatening over 700 marine species through ingestion or entanglement.

• - Oceans absorb roughly 30% of human-produced carbon dioxide, acting as our biggest natural buffer against global warming.

Knowsters in Action

At KnowBe4, environmental stewardship isn't just a corporate policy; it’s built directly into our culture. To honor these days, our teams across the globe engaged in both localized hands-on cleanups and interactive environmental education events.

In the United States, a dedicated group of volunteers focused on removing pollution directly from local natural spaces. Through individual cleanup efforts, the team successfully removed 25 pounds of trash from the environment, stopping that waste from breaking down into harmful microplastics or washing into our waterways.

Meanwhile, our two offices in India took a collaborative and engaging approach to workplace sustainability. They celebrated by distributing live plants to employees to bring nature into their workspaces. They also hosted environmental games, like interactive word searches and environmental charades to act out sustainability concepts. The recap video is both hilarious and inspiring.

Lasting Impact

Equally cool, the team in #India showed off the plants that grew directly from the mud bombs they crafted back on Earth Day.

Seeing these plants thrive is just a reminder that real environmental work doesn't stop when a specific holiday ends. The efforts our teams put in months ago are still actively producing green results today.
